Laser diode basics

Laser diodes are specialized optoelectronic components that are available in a wide variety of specifications. They are designed for emitting coherent illumination within specific wavelength bands. They are extremely useful devices for creating effective structured light solutions. However, these components are very complex and require a deep understanding of their working principles in order to manage their wide tolerance spectrums and their sensitivity to current spikes & ESD.

Operating temperature, optical power setting and duty cycle are all factors that play an important role in laser diode reliability and lifetime. Understanding these parameters in detail enable us to provide our customers with the best performance recommendations for their application. Osela can provide statistical lifetime estimations specific to customer operating conditions, derived from MTTF data provided by laser diode manufacturers as well as our own internal lifetime testing. Heat dissipation

For improved stability and lifetime, it is important for the heat generated by the laser diode and its driver to be dissipated effectively. Osela’s laser products are designed to optimize heat extraction with features such as active thermoelectronic cooling and passive heat sinking strategies. Product specific thermal management recommendations are provided in order to aid our customers with system integration.
